Providing important coverage of Hurricane Irma

OCB staff provided coverage of Hurricane Irma as it approached and impacted Cuba, the Caribbean and Florida. Contractor Meteorologist Lazaro Dominguez worked almost round the clock as the storm

approached Cuba. Despite power outages, flooding, and tree damage, staffers kept our audience up to date with the latest information. In turn, our audience in Cuba reported on localized conditions and damage. Employee Alvaro Alba and contractor Luis Felipe Rojas flew to BBG headquarters in Washington to ensure that newscasts continued throughout the storm. We received many emails, calls and social media posts from our audience in Cuba thanking us for our shortwave radio distribution campaign. They said it was because of those radios that they were able to hear what was happening with the hurricane. Several stories by Martí on the situation of people impacted by the hurricane have been used on local television stations (Univision).
